What is HIB - germ ?

HIB stands for Hemophilus Influenza - B

 

 

What diseases does HIB cause ?

  1. Meningitis , Brain Fever
      2. Pneumonia
      3. Septicemia
      4. Inflammation of the covering layer of the heart ( pericarditis)
      5. Suppurative Otitis(ear discharge)

Out of all these diseases Meningitis ( Brain Fever ) is the most dangerous and can be lethal - that is why this vaccine is commonly known as Hib Meningitis Vaccine.

 

Special features of Hib diseases :

In our Country - HIB diseases are common till the age of some 6 years - hence the special need for vaccination till 6 years of age.

 

Vaccination Schedule :

Booster

A special combination vaccine of DPT and HIB Meningitis :

A combination of DPT and HIB is available commercially and this may be used to save the child the pain of a prick and make vaccination simpler.
