B.C.G. VACCINE

What disease does this vaccine protect against ?

Tuberculosis

Any fever or side effects after vaccination ?

Usually there will be no fever or pain after vaccination. This vaccine is always given on the left shoulder. About 1.5 months after vaccination there will a small nodule ( like a boil ) and this shall be painless and shall persist for some 1 month. This appearance of a nodule is an indication of good response to the vaccine. DO NOT APPLY ANY MEDICINE OR OINTMENT. Usually this nodule will diminish in some 1 month and a small scar will be left.

What in case the vaccine does not produce a nodule ?

In case there no swelling followed by nodule formation even till 2-3 months after vaccination - please consult your pediatrician . It may be needed to repeat the vaccine.

Is this given only once in a lifetime ?

Normally this vaccine is given only once in a lifetime. In some cases, when your pediatrician has some specific suspicion - he may advise you to get an MT test done - in case the MT is negative he may consider re-vaccination with BCG.

What In case it has been missed soon after birth ?

Use the earliest opportunity to get it. Do not leave it just because you have missed the standard time.
